scottWorld darts champion Scott Waites visited a Calderdale high school to talk to students about the sport and give them a boost with their maths learning.

Scott, who works full time as a Repairs Inspector for Pennine Housing, gave a special assembly at Ryburn Valley High School in Sowerby Bridge. Then after a darts match with the Head Teacher, Scott explained the importance of maths in darts scoring and worked with several groups of students to help boost their maths skills. Scott’s motivational work in schools is part of the social housing association’s commitment to invest in the communities in which it operates.

As the two-time BDO World Champion signed autographs, one of the excited students, Sophie, said: “It’s great to meet a real world champion. Darts is a really fun way of learning maths. I’m going to get my own dartboard now!”

Scott commented: “I’ve got a lot from darts and it’s great to be able to give something back and work with young people to inspire them not only to get involved in the sport, but also to realise the usefulness of maths. I use it in darts and also in my work every day. It’s important that students understand maths learning isn’t just for the classroom but also for life after school.”
